I predict the Logo Font & Lettering Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to the Design, Construction and Usage of Alphabets and Symbols by Leslie Cabarga will become a classic for the graphic artist, designer and signer.
The publisher is hyping this book as a Logo book. Their pitch says: “This book-a hands-on guide to the entire logo-making process-combines an enjoyable visual approach with extensive, industry-tested information.” And all that’s true. However I wonder if the writers for How Design Books have ever done lettering or designed a logo. I don’t think so by the level of excitement in their releases.
No, this is not all together about just logos, fonts and lettering; this is about the very soul of an art, a design discipline, and a fine craft. This is about the way creative people think and react to visual stimuli. This is about the most visually exciting and inspiring book for graphic designers to come along in long, long time. In fact, I cannot remember any that really come close.
Logos spreadOkay, it’s a shop manual too. After you get over the initial immersion into visual nirvana, this is a hands-on guide to the entire logo-making process. It shows a wonderful world of type and lettering then combined with extensive, industry-tested information. Yes it covers roughs and concept ’sketch-storming’ — it covers a myriad of styles, it covers hand-lettering - and making computer-set type far more special than any computer could do.
LeslieWhat is most important about this book however is that this is a better trainer on working with computer type than all the trendy Photoshop and Illustrator writers put together. Why? Because those people are basically writers who have read the manuals and can write tutorials. Cabarga on the other hand was creating fabulous graphics before many of those people were born. As an illustrator he’s drawn covers for Time, Newsweek, Fortune and National Lampoon. He has also worked as a designer in the art departments of Rolling Stone and San Francisco’s City Magazine. He was doing it for top art directors two decades before anyone heard of Adobe. He has authored over two dozen books on design including The Designer’s Guide to Color Combinations and The Designer’s Guide to Global Color Combinations.
This book gives you both the tools and the visual alacrity to design blockbuster logos, signs, packaging, posters and t-shirt art. More importantly, it energizes the creative mind with a new world of opportunity and possibilities.
designs Your typography and design can shine way above the crowd. Unlike the ‘desktop publishers’ out there you won’t have to use filters and software tricks in place of creativity. You will no longer have to pad your designs with unnecessary decoration!
For veteran designers, no matter how burned-out you may be; or what kind of creative rut you might be in — I guarantee that 15 minutes with this book and you’ll be spilling out great ideas. The easy-to-read, fun-to-browse, all-picture format will give you more ideas than you have clients for… then goes into meticulous detail about how to use the computer to put those ideas to work.
As I told the readers in the Design Cafe last month; if I could, I would buy them all a copy of this book just so they would have it.
Seymour Chwast says:
“Everything you never thought — in your wildest dreams — you needed to know about type and logos. A mad, but indispensable, compendium of low and high design.”
Roger Black says:
“A book that cuts through all the latter-day typographic clutter and shows how to make lettering work for almost any project. Cabarga’s style, energy and sense of fun make this the most complete type and lettering manual I’ve ever seen.”
Fred Showker says:
“This book needs to be on every visual artist and graphic designer’s desktop, and in the labs of any art or design school worth worth attending.”

Fluent English is the ideal course for developing native-like fluency in English. It focuses on the essentials—idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, practical vocabulary expansion, and grammar usage in context—and builds listening comprehension as well as pronunciation and intonation skills.
The course is divided into twenty lessons covering a range of topics from small talk and ocial situations, to telephones and business meetings, to computers, politics, and the nternet. Each lesson offers essential vocabulary related to its topic, as well as important hrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions that are typically challenging to the intermediatelevel student.
The lessons are divided into ten sections, each of which focuses on a ifferent English language skill:
* Say It Clearly! The first section of each lesson is a recorded pronunciation and intonation warm-up. These sections focus on aspects of pronunciation and intonation that are typically challenging for intermediate students of English —
* consonant clusters, linking, reduced English, challenging sounds, etc.
*
* English at Work. The second section of each lesson features English in realistic contexts, ranging from dialogues to recorded messages to readings. The English at Work section is the cornerstone of each lesson, where the important grammatical structures and vocabulary are demonstrated. These sections are all recorded, giving the student an opportunity to hear and model native speakers.
* Build Your Vocabulary. The vocabulary section of each lesson includes certain vocabulary from the English at Work section as well as other general vocabulary related to the topic of the lesson. Each word or expression is defined in simple English, and an example is given to show realistic usage.
* English Under the Hood. Each lesson focuses on three important grammatical structures. Explanations are complete and straightforward, and plenty of examples are given to demonstrate each construction in context. Each grammatical point is also followed by a practice drill, giving the student a chance to practice and check comprehension.
* Phrasal Verbs. Each lesson includes a list of important and common phrasal verbs centered either on a common base verb, such as take or get, or a particular theme. Each phrasal verb is clearly defined, and examples of usage follow each definition.
* Real English. Important idiomatic expressions related to the topic or theme of each lesson are included in the Real English section. This section is in the form of a short paragraph, where idiomatic expressions are used in context. The student should be able to understand the meaning of each expression from context, but each idiom is also defined in an appendix at the back of the book.
* Bring it All Together. Each lesson also includes five comprehensive review exercises. The first exercise focuses on the vocabulary from the lesson, the next three focus on the grammar and structure, and the last one focuses on the phrasal verbs introduced in that lesson.
* Listen Up! Each lesson includes a recorded listening comprehension exercise. The student is directed to listen to a short article or dialogue on a topic related to the lesson, and then to answer questions written in the book. The Listen Up sections are designed to use both vocabulary and idiomatic expressions related to the theme of the lesson.
* Why Do They Do That? Each lesson includes a culture note that explains an aspect of American culture related to the lesson’s topic. These aspects of culture range from table manners to home ownership to driving habits to proper behavior while being pulled over for speeding. The culture notes are designed to be both interesting and relevant to the student’s experiences.
* Answer Key. Each lesson also includes a key to all exercises.
Students will find numerous opportunities to practice speaking, listening, writing, and reading English. They’ll also learn essential information about living and working in the United States. This program—which comes complete with a 224-page textbook and three hours of recordings on three CDs—offers language learners the perfect opportunity to hone their language skills effectively and efficiently.

Stories We Need To Know:reading Your Life Path In Literature
by jglfgjiogjoi on Sep.03, 2009, under eBooks

Product Description:
From Homer to Harry Potter - the wisdom of classic literature awaits you.
If you’re looking for reliable, time-tested guidance on your journey through life then this is the book for you. Using the wisdom of over three thousand years of literature and myth, Dr Allan Hunter explores the stories we need to know and understand, and shows how they have offered us real advice and guidance for generations.
You’ll find practical advice that will help you identify which of the six archetypes you are presently living, as well as what challenges you may need to face if you are to grow spiritually to fulfill all you are capable of being.
For the first time we have a coherent way of understanding these archetypes and the way they appear in our world and our lives. Until now this way of looking at ourselves and others has been hopelessly confused. Now it is made clear –and we see that the information we have been seeking has always been present in the stories our culture has been treasuring since storytelling began.
Whether you are a student of literature or a student of life, walking a spiritual path or not, the information you’ll find inside this book is an eye-opening experience.
“Just as this is a book about the Stories We Need, Allan Hunter is an author we need. Using what he calls ‘the guiding power of literature’ to illustrate the six distinct stages of personal development he has identified over his 30 years of counseling and teaching, Hunter fascinates, educates and exhilarates. Waves of gratitude to him on behalf of the legions of souls in whom this book is sure to spark introspection, revelation and growth.”
-Suzanne Strempek Shea, author of Becoming Finola
“Stories We Need to Know refreshingly reminds us of what our heavily sedated and theoretical age has sadly forgotten: that great literature was always a source of healing and a path to personal growth. In this groundbreaking study, Allan Hunter uncovers the vital interplay of literature and psychology as he takes a bold new look at the way archetypes – whether found in The Odyssey or Harry Potter – can profoundly transform both individual lives and our spiritually starved society.”
-Robert Atwan, Series Editor, The Best American Essays
Summary: An Introduction to Archetypes
Rating: 4
I enjoyed and learned a great deal reading Allan G Hunter’s book, “Stories We Need to Know”. Indeed, knowing more about archetypes can assist one on his or her journey in life. I began Hunter’s book with almost no background in archetypes but soon built a working knowledge of the innocent, orphan, pilgrim, warrior-lover and monarch. Aside from that I learned how to recognize in literature each archetype and how to apply them to my own life. Apart from illuminating my inner self, there opened a new way to read literature. In fact, I didn’t really understand Harry Potter until I read chapter 17 in the book. Fasinating! Thank-you Mr. Hunter.
Summary: Stories we can immediately apply to our own lives
Rating: 5
I just finished reading this book and it was an excellent read! I found it to be a very thorough and thought-provoking perspective on viewing the stages of life we all traverse. After a sound explanation of each of the stages, Dr. Hunter elaborated by showing how we find these stages in our literature, both ancient and modern. Being an avid explorer of ancient myth and an advocate of modern methods of story telling, I was highly impressed with the work, and I can see myself employing some of this information in future excursions of my own. A must read, for sure.
Summary: The Road to Magic and Peace
Rating: 5
Most of us are living in an Orphan’s world feeling stuck and discontented. Here, according to Dr. Hunter, psychic development is arrested and little action is taken to clarify our beliefs, defend them, and work toward the greater good of others and the cause. From Greek myths to modern struggles he has us consider common behaviors (blaming, following, self-pity) and common temptations (revenge, power, sex, public affirmation) in light of a natural tug toward using our unique talents. Few, it appears, have the courage to pursue that calling.
This is where the Western canon comes in. He reminds us that these are stories we need to know for many reasons. One is to provide models of mature, fulfilled, balanced, and nurturing leaders and their life paths. This, in turn, can inspire searching, letting go, and finding what we each need for an authentic life. An archetype template is provided, known to many of us but rarely applied to both literature and to daily life. This is fascinating. On one page you identify with knights of the round table while on the next you’re clarifying personal values in the margins.
Hunter advocates learning from great literature to help us achieve peace on many levels. If a hint of that is gleaned from Stories We Need To Know - as it was for me - it’s well worth the read.
Summary: Reading ‘Stories’ Opens Doors
Rating: 5
As a young woman in my twenties, reading ‘Stories We Need To Know” was like opening a door of self awareness and understanding, all through learning about life’s storybook characters. Allan Hunter gives readers the opportunity to understand where they are in life, in work, personal, and spiritual existences. We are all students in this life, on our own individual paths and ‘Stories’ gives readers the tools to navigate through the good times and the bad, to get to a place where we really feel fulfilled. I loved it! Just loved it!

Stories We Need to Know: Reading Your Life Path in Literature
By Allan G. Hunter
ISBN 1-84409-123-6 (Findhorn Press, 2008)
By exploring 3,000 years of literature, Dr. Allan Hunter has brought to life six archetypes that traditionally have transmitted sacred meanings to generation after generation. Western society, by taking our stories literally, has disabled the transformative power of myth; this book reinstates that power by revisiting some of the classics using archetypes as your guide. Joseph Campbell would be in bliss if he read Dr. Hunter’s work.
